Montenegro
Overview
Montenegro packs a punch with its diverse landscapes and rich history. The Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts fjord-like beauty and well-preserved medieval towns. Inland, Durmitor National Park offers hiking and skiing opportunities amid dramatic peaks. The coastal resort of Budva attracts sun-seekers with its beaches and lively nightlife. For a quieter experience, head to Lake Skadar, shared with Albania, for bird-watching and boat trips. Don't miss Ostrog Monastery, dramatically carved into a cliff face, or the former royal capital of Cetinje for a dose of culture.
Best time to visit. May to September is ideal for coastal visits, with warm temperatures and less crowds in shoulder months. July and August are busiest but perfect for beach-goers. Winter (December-March) is great for skiing in mountain resorts like Kolašin.

1 | Greet locals with 'Dobar dan' (good day) or 'Zdravo' (hello). Montenegrins appreciate when tourists make an effort to use basic local phrases, even if pronunciation isn't perfect. |
2 | Remove shoes when entering someone's home. It's customary to take off your shoes and leave them at the entrance. Hosts may offer slippers for indoor use. |
3 | Dress modestly when visiting Orthodox churches. Women should cover shoulders and knees, and men should avoid shorts. Some churches provide wraps for visitors who aren't dressed appropriately. |
4 | Tipping isn't mandatory but is appreciated. In restaurants, round up the bill or leave 10% for good service. Tip taxi drivers by rounding up the fare to the nearest euro. |
5 | Respect the laid-back pace of life. Montenegrins value relationships and socializing. Don't rush through meals or appear impatient when service is slower than you're used to. |
6 | Be prepared for smoking in public places. While laws restrict smoking in some areas, it's still common in bars and restaurants. Non-smokers should be prepared for this cultural difference. |
7 | Learn basic Cyrillic alphabet. Many signs are in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Knowing Cyrillic basics can help with navigation, especially in more rural areas. |
8 | Avoid discussing politics or the Balkan conflicts unless initiated by locals. These topics can be sensitive, and it's best to let Montenegrins lead such conversations if they choose. |

Time is precious. Get the most out of every moment traveling.
